部門の紹介・業務内容

  1. 節足動物媒介性の新興・再興感染症（デング熱，オンコセルカ症，フィラリア症，マラリア等）の感染動態や流行因子の解析を，疫学・分子生物学的手法を用いて行う．特に病原体および媒介動物の分類，生態などの基礎研究を中心に行う．

  2. 人畜共通寄生虫症（蟯虫症，糞線虫症等）について，特に病原体の地理的分布，種分化，共進化などを，形態学的・分子生物学的手法を用いて行う．

  3. 開発途上地域を中心として，各種疾患の社会・経済・文化的背景に関する研究を，特に異文化の比較という観点から行う．

  4. 国際医学研究・医療協力の実施に関したコンサルテーション，および海外派遣研究者・学生に対して当該国の文化および言語などの情報提供・支援を行う．また，国内外の寄生虫症の診断等に関する相談窓口としてのサービスも行う．

活動状況（平成１９年度）

    医学部医学科4年生の研究室配属（2007年8〜10月）で1名を指導した．

最近の研究話題

clear 　オンコセルカは人や家畜に寄生し，回旋糸状虫症を引き起こすフィラリアに属する線虫で，吸血昆虫のブユやヌカカによって媒介される．動物寄生性オンコセルカによる人体感染例は極めて少なく，欧米で8例，日本ではわれわれが報告した5例だけである．そのうち日本の5例はすべて大分の症例で，起因種は猪寄生性の Onchocerca dewittei japonica（以下O. d. j. と略）であることを明らかにした．媒介者は不明のため，ブユの本種に対する感受性を検討するために感染実験を行った．その結果，ブユ体内で O. d. j. のミクロフィラリアが感染幼虫まで発育することが分かり，大分産ブユ6種が O. d. j. に感受性を有することが初めて明らかになった．現在，野外採集ブユでも O. d. j. の感染幼虫が見られるかどうか調査中である．
　さらに，大分の人体症例の感染の背景を調査する過程で，熊小屋で採集されたウチダツノマユブユに鳥寄生性と思われる未知のフィラリア幼虫の自然感染を見いだした．
　また，2001年以来タイのチェンマイ大学の研究者と共同で，タイのブユ種とそのフィラリア自然感染の調査を行っている．その過程で，人吸血性ブユ3種からそれぞれ異なる種のフィラリア幼虫の感染を見いだし，これらが人獣共通フィラリア症を引き起こす可能性があることを明らかにした．
　以上の研究成果を，2004年2月の日本熱帯医学会九州支部大会，4月の日本衛生動物学会大会，8月の大分感染症研究会などで発表した．また，大分合同新聞にも掲載された（2004年1月22日，2月9日，3月29日付）．なお，最新の成果を2007年4月に大阪で開催された日本衛生動物学会大会で発表した．
　科学研究費補助金基盤研究（B）(海外学術調査)（研究課題名：東南アジアにおける吸血性昆虫ブユの種分化およびフィラリア媒介能に関する研究．代表高岡，分担福田）が採択されたので，2006年から3年間，タイ，フィリピン，インドネシアにおいて，現地の共同研究者とともにフィールド調査を行っている．
