　高齢者の大きな問題点の一つは，歩行能力（移動能力）の低下である。起立や歩行ができなくなることで，日常生活が不自由に なるだけでなく，呼吸や循環などの内臓機能も低下する。このような点から，下肢の荷重関節（股関節や膝関節）の障害された機 能を回復させることは重要である。この目的で用いられる人工関節置換術は，20世紀の後半に開発された技術であるが，昨今大きな進化を遂げている。人工関節学講座では，日本人の生活様式に適応した新規人工関節と手術機械の開発，術前手術計画の支援ツールの開発，手術手技を学ぶためのセミナーやラーニングコースの実施，人工関節置換術を中心とした診療と臨床研究を行う。

　One of the major problems among the elderly is impaired walking ability. Patients who cannot stand up or walk by themselves will not only suffer from difficulties in daily life, but also from a high risk of cardiac diseases or respiratory diseases. It is important to restore functions of lower extremities to prevent these situations. Joint replacement surgery to recover joint function was developed in the late 20th century. With the improvement of metal and machining technique, joint prosthesis has made tremendous progress recently. The Department of Endoprosthetic Surgery will focus on the following activities:

1. Development of new joint prosthesis and surgical instruments adapted for the Japanese life style
2. Development of computer assisted tools for preoperative planning of TKA
3. Instructional courses and seminars of TKA for doctors and co-medicals
4. Clinical practice and research of joint replacement surgery
