Introduction of clinical department

Following gastrointestinal surgery, we manage health care for patients with esophageal cancer, gastrointestinal malignant tumors (including gastric cancer, colorectal cancer, liver cancer, pancreatic cancer, and biliary cancer), and acute abdomen requiring emergent surgery. For the treatment of gastrointestinal malignant tumors, the most up-to-date procedures with curability that improve the patient’s QoL are adopted according to the tumor stage. Minimally invasive treatments, such as laparoscopic surgery, are the first choice of treatment for malignant tumors in our department. In recent years, robotic surgery has been introduced in patients with rectal cancer. In addition, considering hepatobiliary–pancreatic surgery, we mainly treat malignant diseases of the liver, biliary tract, or pancreas, in addition to benign biliary diseases, such as cholelithiasis and splenic diseases. In recent years, laparoscopic surgery has been introduced positively in patients with high difficulty of hepatobiliary–pancreatic disease and has achieved good results. In addition, metabolic and bariatric surgery for patients with morbid obesity and diabetes was introduced in Japan. Our department has since become one of the top leaders in clinical and research aspects for these patients.
