Introduction of clinical department

We treat various diseases, including lung cancer, respiratory infections, allergic lung disease, interstitial lung disease, and pleural and mediastinal disease.

The incidence of lung cancer and pulmonary emphysema (e.g., chronic obstructive lung disease) is increasing annually. The contents of the latest best-evidence treatments are introduced in this department, which uses an advanced diagnosis system and identifies the best treatment methods as appropriate. Respiratory infectious diseases, such as pneumonia, are quickly diagnosed using the latest appropriate inspection method. We then select an adequate antibiotic based on the related guidelines. We are continually studying the new antimicrobial agents for common and/or severe respiratory infections. Considering asthma sufferers, we plan a new treatment for them mainly using inhalation steroids and substantial patient education. We teach them self-management and inhalation treatments using a peak flow meter to prevent their asthma. The diagnosis and treatment of these diffuse lung diseases are difficult. These diseases should be examined and treated on the basis of an antigen and histological diagnosis. Especially, for the sarcoidosis and interstitial lung disease, we analyze bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and lung biopsy using a bronchoscopy and a thoracoscopy. Many patients with these diseases are examined and treated in this institution because it is the primary medical center in Oita Prefecture where a definite diagnosis may be obtained.

Our department has been authorized by the Japanese Society of Internal Medicine, the Japanese Respiratory Society, the Japanese Society for Respiratory Endoscopy, the Japanese Association for Infectious Diseases, the Japanese Society of Medical Oncology, and the Japanese Society of Allergology. Many regular staff or specialists in respiratory, infectious, and allergic diseases work in this department. We obtain an adequate diagnosis and treatment, and grasp the patient’s condition by widely treating these diseases considering the whole and making good use of the latest technologies.
