Introduction of clinical department

As a core hospital in Oita Prefecture, the Division of Rheumatology plays a large role in patient care, education, and research in the field of rheumatic diseases. We specialize in treating various autoimmune and connective tissue diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, systemic scleroderma, antiphospholipid syndrome, polymyositis/dermatomyositis, mixed connective tissue disease, Sjögren’s syndrome, Takayasu’s arteritis, giant cell arteritis, polyarteritis nodosa, antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated vasculitis (e.g., microscopic polyangiitis, granulomatosis with polyangiitis, eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis), Behçet’s disease, relapsing polychondritis, polymyalgia rheumatica, spondyloarthropathy, IgG4-related disease, among other diseases. Our team also provides clinical care for patients with autoinflammatory diseases characterized by an abnormal activation of the innate immune system. Novel molecular targeted drugs including biologics and JAK inhibitors are recently emerging as promising therapies for a variety of autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases. As some rheumatic diseases could have multiple organ involvement, including eyes, skin, joints, kidneys, lungs, heart, nervous system, and hematopoietic system, we cooperate with other skilled professionals to select the most appropriate therapy for each patient.
