Introduction of clinical department

The Department of Nephrology at Oita University provides medical care for various stages of kidney diseases. We perform kidney biopsies to facilitate diagnoses of urinary abnormalities and/or kidney dysfunction, which we mainly treat with steroid and/or immunosuppressive drugs in patients with glomerulonephritis and interstitial nephritis. We also perform blood purification therapies including plasma exchange and low-density lipoprotein apheresis. A team approach is used in the Chronic Kidney Disease Clinic, where a doctor, nurse, dietician, and pharmacist cooperate in the patients’ medical treatment and education. This group of specialists is involved in the entire flow of treatment from predialysis disease through peritoneal dialysis, hemodialysis, and renal transplantation. We cooperate with the Department of Urology in renal replacement therapies.

Advanced treatments/ Specialized treatments

  1. Renal biopsy and immunosuppressive therapy.
  2. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) education.
  3. Renal replacement therapy.

Specialized outpatient clinic

  • Diabetic Nephropathy Aggravation Prevention Clinic.

The newly developed team in the Oita University Hospital Diabetic Nephropathy Aggravation Prevention Clinic, which includes a board-certified diabetologist, a board-certified nephrologist, a nurse, and a dietician, cooperates in the medical treatment and education of patients. As treatment is often difficult in advanced cases, we would like to manage diabetic kidney disease from an early stage in collaboration with nephrologists, diabetic physicians, nurses, and nutritionists to control its progression to end-stage renal disease.
